The New Microsoft Dynamics AX: Available Q1 of 2016 and Focused on the Full Power of the Microsoft Cloud

Microsoft officially announced today that the next release of Dynamics AX, which has been fully architected for the cloud, will be in the first quarter of 2016. In addition to unveiling the new version name which is simply Dynamics AX (notice sans years or version number) Microsoft highlights in a press release that the latest release of Dynamics AX will deliver 3 key capabilities:

A new user experience to accelerate decision-making – Based on extensive usability analysis, the redesigned Dynamics AX brings a new touch-enabled, modern user interface that uses the principles of highly visual applications that users expect in consumer applications to their enterprise business applications.

Quicker implementation and easier management – The new Dynamics AX delivers a more flexible solution architecture that enables incremental implementations, changes and updates, giving businesses more agility and faster time to value.

Enabling business through the power of the cloud – The new release brings with it the benefits of the cloud that are most important for business — from simple signup, immediate provisioning, and built-in high availability and disaster recovery to elastic capacity to add resources but only pay for them when they are being used.

Mike Ehrenberg, technical fellow, Microsoft Dynamics ERP states in his Dynamics AX blog,

We have harnessed the best of Microsoft technology from Azure to Office 365 to Power BI and delivered a solution reinvented for the demands of modern business and maximizing the business benefits of Microsoft’s intelligent cloud. This is the beginning of a new era for Dynamics – and for reinventing business process and productivity.

For more information about the much anticipated new capabilities of Dynamics AX read this blog post by Christian Pedersen, General Manager, Microsoft Dynamics Marketing.

NAV Clean-up: Time Sheet and Job Ledger

$

Since Luc Van Vugt started the NAV Clean Team, I’ve been very lazy and emailing him little things I find. Now that I’m spending more time in NAV 2016, I’ll step up and start being more vocal on Clean Team topics.

This one I came across isn’t a Boat Anchor, but more of a strange deviation from the usual design patterns.

On the Job Journal Line, you will find these little fields:

These are populated when you use the Suggest Lines from Time Sheets… on the Job Journal. However, here’s a fun comparison when you look at the Job Ledger Entry:

The fields are not retained. When the Job Posting routines run, the Time Sheet fields are only transferred to the Res. Journal Line, which through the Resource Posting lines, carries through some information to a Time Sheet Posting Entry table, but not the Res. Ledger Entry either. That Time Sheet Posting (note: NOT Ledger) Entry table has no connections to the Resource or Job Ledger Entries. The Job Ledger Entry and the Resource Ledger Entry don’t have any way to connect back to the Time Sheet Posting Entry.

Furthermore, this very disconnected Time Sheet Posting Entry table is not connected to Navigate in any way. This, for example, means that the Time Sheet Line Comments are entirely internal and cannot be connected to by any process in the future, such as during invoice creation from a Job.

It is very strange design. It’s not quite being treated as a Document pattern, but it’s not quite being treated as a Journal-Ledger pattern. And in that grey space between the designs, potentially valuable data linkages are lost.

Is it easy to fix enough that will produce little risk? Yes. Copy the fields to the Job Ledger (and possibly the Resource Ledger). Make the three additional lines in the transfer functionality.

Easy to do as a custom. Easy as well to fix in the NAV base code.

Tip #522: Escape CRM Online sandbox

$

I said it before and I said it again that presenting at the conferences like eXtremeCRM can be a real eye-opener. You quickly learn, for example, that Bob could not make it and you also learn how much people know about CRM. With all the accumulated knowledge it comes as a surprise that some of the features that has been around for years are misunderstood, and underused.

Take, for example, this menu item:
Register Service Endpoint
As it turns out, people are still unsure what it’s there for and what exactly does it do.

Without writing a single line of code it allows registration of an endpoint that is similar to a standard plugin registration so that you can register steps with it, like create for the account entity. The difference is that, instead of executing your plugin code this endpoint will push the data out of CRM to the Azure Service Bus with all the plugin context intact. For example, push it to the queue and then create a listener on the other end and pick up whatever CRM pushed out.

Why would we want to do that? How about:

  1. Remoting the lengthy processing to bypass 2 minutes sandbox limit.
  2. Publishing context for partner’s consumption – the data pushed out is protected by service bus security but no longer governed by CRM.
  3. Copying data to on-premises database for processing and reporting – listener can be behind the firewall and get an easy secure access to the service bus.
  4. Run small listening service on users’ computers notifying them almost in real-time when something important happens

Big opportunity win notification

Of course, there are some additional moving parts to the story like creating an Azure Service Bus, negotiating security between CRM and the service bus, etc, but all steps are documented to death in MSDN and there are some good articles and walkthroughs written about it.

Go and create some goodness.

Tip #523: Tipster guide to invoking custom actions without code

Hey, it’s Friday and time for another video tip. In the last week’s video we talked about how to create custom action, add parameters to it, define conditions and steps, etc. This week we continue by demonstrating how to call your custom actions from real-time workflows (or dialogs) without writing any code.

Give us your feedback, all of it: good, bad, and ugly, I’m sure we can take it. Suggest new topics either in comments or by sending your ideas to jar@crmtipoftheday.com.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM vs Salesforce: Missing Functionality and Hidden Costs

white paper coverWhen comparing the costs of Microsoft Dynamics CRM versus Salesforce.com, it’s critical to evaluate the functionality to make sure that you are comparing apples to apples.

To make sure you get what you need, ask if there is an extra cost for additional functionality, including:

  • Visual workflow
  • Partner and community portals
  • Mobile support
  • Outlook integration
  • Data migration and de-duplication.

When comparing these two products, make sure that you compare all the benefits, not just the costs.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 - How to Use Trigger Events - Part 1

$

Hi All,

Recap - "Till Now We Have Discussed the Concept of Events and Subscription With an Example".
If you are missing the Story, Refer Table of Index For Events & Subscriptions.

Let's start it with What Microsoft Says About Events, Publisher and Subscribers.

> An event is the declaration of the occurrence or change in the application. An event is declared by a C/AL function, which is referred to as an event publisher function. An event publisher function is comprised of a signature only and does not execute any code.

> A publisher is the object that contains event publisher function that declares the event. The publisher exposes an event in the application to subscribers, essentially providing them with a hook-up point in the application. Publishing an event does not actually do anything in the application apart from making the event available for subscription.

> A subscriber listens for and handles a published event. A subscriber is a C/AL function that subscribes to a specific event publisher function and includes the logic for handling the event. When an event is raised, the subscriber function is a called and it code is run.

If you don't understand what above statement says don't worry I will make sure that all doubts get clear when we finish this series about Event, Publisher and Subscribers.

Types of Events In Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 -

There are three different event types: Business, Integration, and Trigger events.

In This Article We Will talk about and see How we can use Trigger Events (The Simple One) -

Points To Note -

> Trigger Events Only Works with Table and Page Object.
> Trigger Events are already Declared (No Declaration Required).
> For Trigger Events We only need to Subscribe It and Use It.

So Let's See how it Happens, first theoretically and then we will see a Demo for same -

What are my table functions which are released my Microsoft -

For Table - OnInsert, OnModify OnRename & OnDelete.
For Each Table Field - OnValidate & OnLookup.

When we Say Trigger Events it Means for each of the table function listed above (Except Field Lookup) there are Two Functions Added Like -

> OnBefore
> OnAfter

Just to Clarify OnBefore Doesn't Mean that code execute Before Scope of Validate Start or OnAfter Doesn't Mean that Code Executes After Scopes of Validate Completed.

It's Just the Positional Parameters, Before Staring Standard Code or After Completing Standard Code, as shown below.

So Much Talk Let's start See Practical Scenario of Using Trigger Events -

1. Consider a Scenario Where your customer says That He Need A Solution as below -

> There will be a Table called Item Revision where I will store some extra Information about Item.
> That Should be accessible from Item Pages.
> When I Select a Item on Sales Order, a Field (Revision No.) Should get updated on Sales Line.
> The Field Should Flow to Posted Sales Invoices and Posted Sales Shipment.
> If I Delete a Item The Details Related to Item on New Table Should get Deleted.

We will cover some in this article and some in Next Articles.

So Let's start Customizing the Standard NAV W1 Objects for Same.

1. Create a Table & Page as below with ID 50000.

2. Now We Link This Page on Item Pages (List and Card) as usual Way.

3. Now We Require to Make Sure that whenever a Item Is Deleted Its Related Revision Details are also Deleted.

What we Used to Do, something Like This - OnDelete of Item Trigger Write a Custom Code as Below.

What We Should Do Now -

4. Create a Custom Codeunit 60000 Say MyCustomer Event Subscribers.

 > Navigate to Functions and Create a Function Say - ExecuteonDeleteofItem
 > Navigate to Properties of Function and set as below -
   > Event - Subscriber
   > EventPublisherObject - Table 27
   > EventFunction - OnAfterDeleteEvent (Say Yes to Confirmation Window).

5. Now You will see that you have created a New Subscriber Events.
6. Lets write the Same Code Here.

Let's Create a Item and Add Some Revision into the Item and Then Let's Delete the Item, To test the code written.

Hope the article helps you in understanding what are Trigger Events and how we use them. I know there are so many questions in your mind, do share your queries on Email or comment to this article.

If Required You can download the Objects for NAV 2016 W1 from OneDrive.

** File Name - Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 - Event Demo (Part 1 Objects)

In the Next article we will keep our focus still on the Trigger Events.

Stay Connected.

NAV TechDays 2015 wrap up

$

Another NAV TechDays is over, and this one was the best so far. 950 people from all over the world all passionate about NAV and technology and eager to learn and share and discuss the latest in NAV. It was amazing, Luc did a great job again, and I am looking forward to the next year, hoping this conference makes it beyond 1000 attendees.

This year I have delivered a yet another “Black Belt” session named “Client Add-ins Black Belt: bringing .NET and JavaScript together” and as promised, I deliver the session material here on my blog.

So let’s start:

As always with these materials – I provide all of this as-is, make no guarantees, claims, or whatever. Use it, or abuse it, and see if it works for you. If it does, please let me know by making a comment here.

This time I honestly hope I will find enough time to take the concepts I presented out of the pile you find here in the materials I posted. I’ve got quite a lot of great and encouraging feedback, and I know a lot of you want to know more about the mechanics behind the concepts I demonstrated. But time is relative, I heard, and it’s never been my best friend. Let’s see. But rest assured that I want to blog about it as much as you want me to.

Once again, thanks for great feedback – it’s you folks that keep me doing this. Thanks for supporting me for a long time, and I hope to see you again in Antwerp, Prague, Chandler, or at one of many Cloud SureStep for NAV Architects trainings that are planned for next year.

AX for Retail 2012 R3 CU9: Retail Pricing Simulator

$
0
0

A new feature introduced in AX for Retail R3 CU9 is Pricing Simulator in AX.  The Pricing Simulator is also available for AX 2012 R3 pre-CU9 by installing KB 3037365. This means that pricing administrators can test a variety of pricing, discounts and promotion capabilities and use these to provide a consistent pricing and promotion experience to the customer without having to go through multiple steps and test the price in POS.

Pricing simulator includes:

  • The trade agreements for products, the channel and customers (prices (Sales), line discounts (Sales), multiline discounts (Sales), total discounts(Sales))
  • The retail specific price adjustments
  • The retail specific discounts
  • The retail specific quantity discounts
  • The retail specific mix and match offers
  • Threshold discounts
  • Affiliation
  • Loyalty
  • Catalogs
  • Discount Bar Codes support

A new menu item is created on the retail area page, which opens the pricing simulator form. On this form, user can select channel, date and time, and all other pricing parameters (eg: Customer, loyalty programs, discount codes, affiliations, catalogs) to simulate the pricing results on the transaction.

To navigate to the Retail pricing simulator go to Retail > Inquiries > Pricing simulator

General Fast Tab:

You can create several pricing simulators per Retail Channel

Select the Date and time

There is an option to include disabled discounts.

Select the following options

  • Catalogs
  • Customer account
  • Affiliations
  • Loyalty tiers
  • Discount codes

Sales line fast tab – this simulates the price when entered on the sales line based on the criteria selected in the General fast tab

Select the Item,  variant, unit

Transaction summary fast tab – this simulates the Subtotal for all items, total discount, and the total margin percent.

Below is a simple example for the Signature Mountain Bike Tire (Item 0003) for the Houston store

In this case, the Original price for item 0003 comes from the Items Sell fast tab or Trade agreement

Item 0003 is in the Retail Product Category Hierarchy – ALL > Action Sports > BMX Biking > BMX Parts & Accessories > BMX Tires & Tubes.  Some discounts are applied to the category.

 The Item is included in:

 Discounts:

Student discount – Category ALL (10%)

Affiliation for Student Discount

Loyalty 2% off selected items – Category BMX Biking (2%)

Threshold discount:

Loyalty 5% off over $100 – Category ALL (does not apply because not over $100)

If you are wondering why a discount is not included in POS for a Store, make sure you check the Price Group and is it applied to the store.
