Microsoft Dynamics 365 Tips and Tricks: Use Business Rules
If you take a look at your System Administrator CRM Utility Belt of super powers, make sure that Business Rules are included. Initially introduced in CRM 2013 and available in 2013, 2015, 2016 and Dynamics 365, Business rules allow you to apply form logic without needing JavaScript code or building plug-ins. System Administrators rejoice! Configuration above customization!
Business Rules provide a simple drag-and-drop interface to implement and maintain fast-changing, commonly used rules. A business rule runs in real-time, so you will see the action as soon as a condition has been met (unlike a workflow that will run on form save). You can apply a business rule on a Main Form or Quick Create Form. They will work online, on Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Tablets and in Dynamics 365 for Outlook (supported in both online and offline modes).
Here are the actions you can take by configuring a simple drag-and-drop Business Rule on a form:
- Set Field Value
- Clear Field Values
- Set Field Requirement Levels
- Validate Data & Show Error Messages
- Show Fields
- Hide Fields
- Enable Fields
- Disable Fields
- Create Business Recommendations
I use Show Fields and Hide Fields quite often. Here's a real-world example: A company sells both Residential and Commercial products. On the Opportunity form, there are some fields that are applicable if it is a Residential Opportunity. There are other fields that apply only for a Commercial Opportunity. If I have a field called "Opportunity Type" where a Sales Rep can select either Residential or Commercial, I can configure a simple Business Rule using the "Set Visibility" action to show/hide the appropriate fields:
Another great Business Rule is the ability to set Field Requirement Levels. This allows you to keep a clean form and minimize required fields (enhancing user adoption) while setting field-level requirements only when appropriate. For example, perhaps once the Probability of an Opportunity is greater than 50%, we want Est Revenue and Est Close Date to be required. You can do this by adding a Business Rule with a "Set Business Required" action:

Warehouse Insight Now Available for Dynamics 365 Business Central
Insight Works’ flagship WMS product, Warehouse Insight, is now available for Dynamics 365 Business Central, and can be found on Microsoft’s AppSource. Why is this a big deal? For starters, Dynamics 365 Business Central is a great solution for supply chain management, and given that our Warehouse Insight is quite the powerful warehouse management system, there is the potential for this to be a match made in warehousing simplicity heaven.
But before we go into the ins and outs of what makes Warehouse Insight the perfect warehouse management product for your needs, let’s take a brief look at the changes Microsoft has implemented to make these kinds of processes possible.
Apps, ERPs, NAV…Oh My!
For many years, Microsoft has been offering Microsoft Dynamics NAV, an ERP that is not cloud-based, but for this year the software giant changed the name to Business Central (you’ve probably seen plenty of references to this in our blogs). Where some users have gotten confused – and rightfully so – is when Microsoft created a cloud version also called Business Central; so, what was once known as Dynamics NAV is now Business Central (on-premises), with the new cloud version known as Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Here’s what’s important to note: The modern model for all things Business Central that Microsoft is going with is similar to Apple and Android, wherein there is a “base” system in which apps can be downloaded and installed. As such, Insight Works products are going to be available in app form as we join the forward march into modern day tech…a world that seemingly knows no boundaries and encompasses a nearly infinite number of applications and industries.
Just to give you an idea of how all-encompassing this approach is, Microsoft’s App Store for Business Central includes solutions for:
- Analytics
- Artificial Intelligence
- Collaboration
- Customer Service
- Finance
- Human Resources
- IT + Administration
- Internet of Things
- Marketing
- Operations + Supply Chain
- Productivity
- Sales

At-a-glance, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central helps you to automate and secure your supply chain via:
- Optimized Inventory Levels – Use built-in intelligence to predict when and what to replenish, and purchase only what you need with dynamically updated inventory levels.
- Avoidance of Lost Sales and Reduced Shortages – Maintain the right amount of inventory by automatically calculating stock levels, lead times and reorder points; you can even suggest substitutes when requested items are out of stock.

How to renew your Microsoft Partner Network membership
Every year, Microsoft Partner Network members are required to renew their membership. This year, there have been some changes to the process as partners migrate to Partner Center—an enhanced experience that acts as the singular place for partners to manage their partnership with Microsoft.
To make the renewal process easier, we’ve created a checklist for you. Follow these steps to renew on time and ensure continued access to your Microsoft Partner Network resources and offers.
1. Check your membership expiration date and set a reminder
Be prepared for your membership renewal. Find your membership anniversary date (aka the date your membership expires) in Partner Center. To access Partner Center, visit partner.microsoft.com, select “Dashboard,” and log in using your Azure Active Directory account credentials.
To check when your anniversary date is, select “Membership Offers” in Partner Center. On the “Purchased” tab, you can see your expiration date as well as the status of your membership, auto-renewal options, and payment options.
Note that in Partner Center, partners are able to renew starting the day after their renewal date and have 30 days to renew. So, if your renewal date is November 15, you can start the process on November 16 and have until December 14 to complete it. You will not lose access to resources during this window, but if you don’t renew during that window, you will lose your benefits and your competencies. Select “Learn More” (shown above) to find out more about this policy.
2. Make sure your contact information is correct
Microsoft will email you notifications to remind you to renew your membership. Check that your primary contact information is up to date by following these steps in Partner Center:
- Go to the Settings icon and select “Partner Settings.”
- Review your Partner profile and Organizational profile.
- If you need to change the details of your legal address, your company may be contacted for verification. When you make changes to your legal details, it may affect your tax information. Make sure your tax information remains accurate. Contact support with questions.
Also, these messages may end up in your spam folder, so be sure to check your spam regularly.
3. Review your membership requirements and where you stand
As membership requirements can be subject to change, if you have a competency or plan to attain one, check the requirements in the Membership section of partner.microsoft.com.
You can see your missing requirements by logging into Dashboard on the Microsoft partner site and navigating to the “Competencies” tab. Here’s an example of how to see what requirements you still need to complete to renew your competency:
In this example, the partner has requirements to fulfill to attain or retain the Application Development competency. By selecting the competency, they can see the requirements they are missing.
To learn more about how to view the requirements you need to complete, read these instructions.
4. Create an Azure Active Directory (AAD) account if you don’t already have one
When it’s time for you to migrate to Partner Center, you’ll log into the new experience using an AAD account. If you don’t have one, create one now to save yourself time during the migration process. Make sure it’s set up properly and tied to your organization, rather than individuals within your organization. Learn more about AAD.
5. Time to renew? Log into the Dashboard on partner.microsoft.com to get started
The Dashboard is your gateway to renewing and managing your account.
Microsoft is dedicated to providing the best experiences to its partners and we hope that this checklist is helpful. For more in-depth guidance on Partner Center, visit the Partner Center support page. If you’d like assistance, contact our dedicated support team by using the chat agent on partner.microsoft.com or call 1-800-MPN-SOLV.
